Sometimes a writer’s mind is a wasteland of boring ideas — stories, posts, and articles that have been written and rewritten hundreds of times before with no new message or sparkling insight to be learned.
Sure, the titles may have been spruced up to mask the repetitive nature of a piece.
But five seconds in, a reader can smell it. And they will remember who attempted to lure them in with misleading bait.
So how can we find that magic cache of motivation that allows us to see, hear, and imagine things differently?
As writers, we’re always looking.
Because in order to be recognized as someone who writes above and beyond the masses who continue to churn out the same over-washed laundry, we need to find new ways to approach our craft.
Here’s a short excerpt from Please God, Make Me a Writer with a few suggestions for keeping your writing interesting — and authentic.

Still looking for the magic formula for attracting — and keeping — readers? Join the growing crowd.
Here’s my thought on the secret to luring curious eyes to your work: Unless there’s a way to attach a long, sticky strip of flypaper laced with honey to each story, there’s no guarantee anyone will stay engaged past the first paragraph.
This reality should come as no surprise.
Attention spans are short, and the clicky, glittery, WTF headlines that initially draw curiosity only deliver so much satisfaction.
In fact, this very scenario brings back memories of my dating years, when I’d be attracted to some irresistible, got-to-get-closer-must-touch-him-now guy who turned out to be a real turd pile after the initial how-do-you-do’s were over.
So how do we instill our audience with the confidence to stick around and give us a chance?
Here are a few ideas I’m working on to assure readers it’s worth taking the risk to get past the outside layer and discover what’s waiting inside. Maybe a few of these tips with work for you — and keep you motivated to try new methods of increasing your exposure.
